Happy Advent!  Almost Merry Christmas – but not quite – we still have a few days to go before Christmas Day and the official start of the Christmas Season.  But it is almost here!

Of course for all of us, the way we celebrate Christmas this year will be very different from how we usually celebrate Christmas.  But I think that except for people who suffer from certain mental illnesses, the rest of us still can have a very Merry Christmas this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.  I do think that it is healthy to acknowledge that we are not completely happy with how we will celebrate Christmas this year – or with a whole lot of other things in our lives right now.  It is never good to repress our feelings, to try to pretend that we feel great about everything even when we do not.  But once we have acknowledged the difficulties and disappointments that we are experiencing especially during the coronavirus pandemic, I think it best for us to try to refocus our attention on the many ways that God continues to bless us even during the coronavirus pandemic.  To remain focused on our difficulties and disappointments would be wallowing in self-pity, which is never good or healthy.  I think it best to focus as much as possible on the positive and good, even in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.  For example, to me, the greatest Christmas gift this year is all of the COVID-19 vaccines that are here or on the way – a source of real hope that the coronavirus pandemic will end sometime next year.  (Click here to see the latest memo from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops about the COVID-19 vaccines.)  So I am trying to focus on the vaccines rather than all of the negatives that could creep into my thinking right now.

So that is my recommendation for a very Merry Christmas:   Acknowledge our difficulties and disappointments, but not wallow in them, and as much as possible focus on our blessings (and thank God for them).  That is a formula for a Merry Christmas – and a happy life in general.  And that is my prayer for all of you – that you will indeed have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

¡Feliz Adviento! Casi Feliz Navidad, pero no del todo, todavía nos quedan unos días antes del día de Navidad y el inicio oficial de la temporada navideña. ¡Pero ya casi está aquí!

Por supuesto, para todos nosotros, la forma en que celebramos la Navidad este año será muy diferente a la forma en que solemos celebrar la Navidad. Pero creo que a excepción de las personas que sufren ciertas enfermedades mentales, el resto de nosotros todavía podemos tener una muy Feliz Navidad este año a pesar de la pandemia de coronavirus. Creo que es saludable reconocer que no estamos completamente contentos con la forma en que celebraremos la Navidad este año, o con muchas otras cosas en nuestras vidas en este momento. Nunca es bueno reprimir nuestros sentimientos, tratar de fingir que nos sentimos bien por todo, incluso cuando no nos sentimos bien. Pero una vez que hemos reconocido las dificultades y desilusiones que estamos experimentando, especialmente durante la pandemia de coronavirus, creo que es mejor para nosotros tratar de volver a centrar nuestra atención en las muchas formas en que Dios continúa bendiciéndonos incluso durante la pandemia de coronavirus. Mantener la concentración en nuestras dificultades y desilusiones sería revolcarse en la autocompasión, lo que nunca es bueno ni saludable. Creo que es mejor concentrarse lo más posible en lo positivo y lo bueno, incluso en medio de la pandemia de coronavirus. Por ejemplo, para mí, el mejor regalo de Navidad de este año es todas las vacunas COVID-19 que están aquí o en camino, una fuente de esperanza real de que la pandemia de coronavirus terminará en algún momento del próximo año.
