Procedures for Distribution of Ashes During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has issued instructions on how to distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. After blessing the ashes and sprinkling them with holy water in silence, the priest is to address those present in general (and not individually as the faithful receive ashes) “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” .… or …. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Then the ashes are to be distributed in silence by sprinkling them on the crown of the head instead of a cross on the forehead. Please note that in much of the world, this is the normal way of distributing ashes on Ash Wednesday.
For the safety of everyone, both the ministers distributing the ashes and those receiving ashes will be absolutely required to wear masks in the way recommended by public health officials and mandated under current state law – no exceptions.
Please also note that receiving ashes is not a requirement and Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation. Our own internal disposition and intention to repent and start over is the best fruit of Ash Wednesday, and ashes are simply an external sign of that internal reality. One can still enter into Lent with a repentant heart even if he or she decides that receiving ashes is not the right thing for him or her this year.
