Thank you again to all who donated to last year’s Building Today for Tomorrow Capital Campaign/PSA! We have now begun this year’s Capital Campaign/PSA. In the next several weeks, we will send letters and donor envelopes to those of you who are registered parishioners, including information about how you can qualify for recognition on the Tree of Life in Coleman Center. For those of you who have donated through the years to the Capital Campaign/PSA, we also will provide information about how you may already qualify for recognition on the Tree of Life. Later in the spring, we will have the opportunity at our weekend Masses to reflect on the importance of the Capital Campaign/PSA for our parish and diocesan ministries and to make a donation if we have not already done so.
If you would like to get an early start on participating in this year’s Capital Campaign/PSA, please click on the links below:
You can also complete one of the PSA donor envelopes available in the racks in the church and mail it, bring it to the Parish Office or put it in the Sunday collection.
May God bless you for your contribution to our parish and diocesan ministries!
Blessing of Candles on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Wednesday, February 2
There will be a blessing of candles this Wednesday, February 2, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, at the 8 am Mass in English and a special 7 pm Mass in Spanish. There will also be a blessing of figures of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño) at both Masses.
It has long been the tradition in the Church to bless candles at the beginning of Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2 (another name for this feast is “Candlemas Day”). We use lit candles in our prayer and worship to remind us of the light of Christ. In the Gospel for the Presentation of the Lord (Luke 2:22- 40), Simeon rejoices when he sees the Child Jesus being presented by Mary and Joseph in the Temple in Jerusalem, describing Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory” for the Jewish people. So the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a good time to focus on Jesus as the Light of the World – and the light of our lives.
At all of our Masses on February 2, we will bless not only the different types of candles that are used throughout the year in the church, but also any candles that you bring from home to be blessed. We encourage you to bring not only the candles that you use at prayer time, but all of the candles that are used in the home for different purposes and occasions. For example, perhaps you could buy all of the birthday candles that you will use for the year and bring those to be blessed on February 2 – that way, you and your family will be reminded of the presence of Christ and his light in every birthday celebration.
At the end of Mass, there will be a blessing of figures of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño), as is the custom in some parts of Mexico, the Philippines and elsewhere.
Blessing of Throats Celebrating the Memorial of St. Blaise at all Masses on Thursday, February 3 and Saturday and Sunday, February 5 and 6
The blessing of throats celebrating the Memorial of St. Blaise will be given at all Masses on Thursday, February 3 and Saturday and Sunday, February 5 and 6. The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, on February 3.
St. Blaise was a physician and later a bishop in late 3rd century/early 4th century Armenia (in modern-day Turkey). St. Blaise is said to have miraculously cured a little boy who nearly died because he was choking on a fishbone. From that miracle came the tradition of the blessing of throats on the Memorial of St. Blaise with the following blessing: “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
This year, because of the current surge in COVID cases, the blessing of throats will be given in two ways. First, before the final blessing and dismissal at the end of Mass, priests will impart the St. Blaise blessing by extending hands over all of the people in the church while saying the prayer of blessing. Then, those who wish to do so may come forward after the final dismissal for an individual St. Blaise blessing in the traditional manner from a priest, deacon or lay communion minister using crossed candles touched to the throat. This second blessing will not be necessary to have received the St. Blaise blessing for those who do not want to come forward for an individual blessing because of COVID safety concerns. We are making this second blessing available for those who wish to receive the St. Blaise blessing in the traditional manner using blessed candles touched to the throat.
