Congratulations to Sr. Margaret Barrett, who celebrates her 75^th anniversary of religious profession as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet today, March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph. Thank you, Sr. Margaret, for your many years of service, including here at OLG!

Felicidades a la Hermana Margaret Barrett, quien celebra su 75 aniversario de profesión religiosa como Hermana de San José de Carondelet hoy, 19 de marzo, Solemnidad de San José. ¡Gracias, Hermana Margaret, por sus muchos años de servicio, incluso aquí en OLG!

As we journey through Lent, the news from Ukraine reminds us about how heavy is the cross that the Ukrainian people are currently carrying. Putin’s forces seem to be intentionally targeting civilian populations in Ukraine, including hospitals and schools, killing many Ukrainians and leaving many others homeless and without essential services. Putin’s forces also are targeting and suppressing fellow Russians who are courageously speaking out against Putin’s atrocities in Ukraine. We obviously need to continue our prayers and support for the Ukrainian and Russian people who are courageously resisting the evil of Putin and his henchmen.

I also hope that as we witness the current suffering of the Ukrainian people, we are reminded about how good we have it here in the United States. For just about all of us here in the United States, no matter how difficult or challenging our lives currently are, the people of Ukraine have it worse. Indeed, for many people in Ukraine, not only do they have all the same types of difficulties and challenges in their lives that we have in ours but also have to endure Putin’s atrocities that are being heaped upon them at the same time (for example, hospital patients whose hospitals are bombed). So let us, in our Lenten prayers for the people of Ukraine and Russia, also remember to thank God for how good we have it here in the United States.

If we are currently wallowing in our own challenges and difficulties, focusing a lot of energy on feeling sorry for ourselves for one reason or another, I hope that praying for the people of Ukraine and Russia and thanking God for our own lives in the United States will help to pull us out of that funk and give us a more positive attitude about our own lives, blessed as we are.

Mientras transitamos por la Cuaresma, las noticias de Ucrania nos recuerdan cuán pesada es la cruz que el pueblo ucraniano está cargando actualmente. Las fuerzas de Putin parecen estar apuntando intencionalmente a la población civil en Ucrania, incluidos hospitales y escuelas, matando a muchos ucranianos y dejando a muchos otros sin hogar y sin servicios esenciales. Las fuerzas de Putin también están atacando y reprimiendo a otros rusos que valientemente se pronuncian en contra de las atrocidades de Putin en Ucrania. Obviamente, debemos continuar con nuestras oraciones y nuestro apoyo a los pueblos ucraniano y ruso que resisten con valentía la maldad de Putin y sus secuaces.

También espero que cuando seamos testigos del sufrimiento actual del pueblo ucraniano, recordemos lo bien que lo estamos pasando aquí en los Estados Unidos. De hecho, para muchas personas en Ucrania, no solo tienen los mismos tipos de dificultades y desafíos en sus vidas que nosotros tenemos en la nuestra, sino que también tienen que soportar las atrocidades de Putin que se les están acumulando al mismo tiempo (por ejemplo, pacientes hospitalizados cuyos hospitales son bombardeados). Entonces, en nuestras oraciones de Cuaresma por la gente de Ucrania y Rusia, también recordemos agradecer a Dios por lo bien que lo estamos pasando aquí en los Estados Unidos.

This liturgy will include the blessing of the new paschal candle, an extended Liturgy of the Word outlining our salvation history, Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, First Communion) for adults and children of catechetical age, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This liturgy will last a few hours – let us celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ without concern about time!

Esta liturgia incluirá la bendición de el nueva cirio pascual, una Liturgia de la Palabra extendida delineando nuestra historia de salvación, Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación, Primera Comunión) para los adultos y niños en edad de catequesis, y la Liturgia de la Eucaristía. In a few weeks our parish will initiate Witness to Love. You may be asking, what is Witness to Love? According to their website: “It is a virtue based, catechumenate model of marriage renewal and formation. The Witness to Love model helps couples facilitate an authentic dialogue about their relationships with God and provides an attraction to the Church through the gift of mentoring. It helps mentor couples guide and encourage engaged couples to integrate and connect them with their parish, while reaping fruits of renewal and growth within their own marriage.”

What does this mean for our parish? Our current marriage preparation process will be replaced by this ‘mentoring’ ministry that will assist our engaged couples as well as our mentoring couples to grow in their relationship and their involvement in parish life.

Discontinuation of face mask requirement for extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion

Please note that starting this weekend, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will no longer be required to wear face masks as they distribute Communion. This is consistent with the relaxation of most COVID mask mandates over the past several weeks. Everyone is, of course, welcome to wear a face mask in the church if they so choose, but that is their choice, and we expect everyone to continue to be mutually respectful of one another in the choices they make in this regard.

Knights of Columbus Food Drive: April 2 & 3

The next Knights of Columbus Food Drive will be on Saturday, April 2nd from 5:00-7:00PM & Sunday, April 3rd from 6:00 - 11:30AM. Items collected will be distributed to those locally in need. Bring your donations to the Parish Office garage on your way to Mass. Needed: Canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruit, tuna, meats, stew); Dry foods (hot or cold cereal, beans, rice, spaghetti/pasta); Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet tissue, disposable diapers). Thank you for your support!

The Orange Catholic Foundation's gala for 2022, “A Night of County Under the Stars,” is in less than a month!

This year’s gala will honor the Walker family of Farmers & Merchants Bank and Dr. Vincent Nguyen for their involvement, devotion and commitment to the Faith and to the community of Orange County and beyond. The gala will be held on Saturday, April 2 at the Christ Cathedral campus.

The event will begin with Mass at 4:30 p.m. in Christ Cathedral (attendance is optional), followed by a cocktail reception, then dinner and ending the night with dancing. Entertainment is by Gary LeVox, lead singer of Rascal Flatts.

There is still time to become a partner or to purchase tickets for this event! Proceeds from the gala’s special appeal will provide support to the Priests Retirement Fund.

All are invited to experience the Labyrinth Walk sponsored by St. Irenaeus Health Ministry’s Labyrinth Ministry on Tuesday, April 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the parish hall located on the campus of St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, 5201 Evergreen Ave., Cypress.

This is a free event. The Labyrinth is a full-body prayer that involves literally walking in prayer following a circular floor pattern. This experience can enhance your inward Lenten journey and help prepare you spiritually for Easter. The Holy Week Labyrinth Walk is an opportunity to quiet your mind, center yourself, and find a quiet respite from the problems that bombard us daily.

As St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “If we really want to pray, we must first learn to listen; for in the silence of the heart, God speaks.” It only takes about 20 to 30 minutes to pray and walk the labyrinth. Give yourself the gift of resting in the quiet serenity, meditating, praying and listening to hear God’s voice.

There is no one “right” way to do the Labyrinth Walk. We each have our unique prayers and concerns.
