Intellectual Disabilities (ID) Fund Drive

Fellow parishioners, this weekend the Knights of Columbus (KOC) will be conducting the annual Intellectual Disabilities (ID) fund drive at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The purpose of the ID program is not to only educate our community on Intellectual Disabilities of children who have been born with mental retardation, autism and/or other cognitive disabilities but also to raise money to support programs for these children and their families. At the conclusion of every Mass this weekend KOC members will be located at all exits to collect whatever donation you can provide to help the ID programs. Thank you for your generosity.

Felicidades a Hermana Margaret por su 75 aniversario de profesión religiosa

Compañeros feligreses, este fin de semana los Caballeros de Colón (KOC) llevarán a cabo la campaña anual de recaudación de fondos para Discapacidades Intelectuales (ID) en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. El propósito del programa ID no es solo educar a nuestra comunidad sobre las discapacidades intelectuales de los niños que nacieron con retraso mental, autismo y/u otras discapacidades cognitivas, sino también recaudar fondos para apoyar programas para estos niños y sus familias. Al final de cada misa este fin de semana, los miembros de KOC se ubicarán en todas las salidas para recolectar cualquier donación que pueda proporcionar para ayudar a los programas de identificación. Gracias por tu generosidad.

Inflation is causing a financial crunch for most of us these days. With significantly higher gasoline prices, we have to think twice about doing anything that involves driving our cars and burning that expensive gasoline. In just about every part of our lives, we have to think carefully about how we spend our money. In our families, we have to think about the types of groceries we buy, foregoing more expensive foods for the moment. In our work and school lives, we have to keep costs down as much as possible. In our parish life, as we plan our liturgies for Holy Week and Easter, we will have to simplify certain things this year so as to reduce costs and live within our financial means.

It is easy to complain about these current economic realities and to wallow in our perceived financial hardships. But perhaps the Parable of the Prodigal Son, this Sunday’s Gospel, can help us to rethink our complaining and wallowing and actually find happiness and joy even in these difficult economic times. One of the many lessons of the Parable of the Prodigal Son is that we do not find ultimate happiness in having lots of money to spend recklessly. The Prodigal Son had lots of money to spend on “a life of dissipation,” as the Gospel of Luke describes it. Although that “life of dissipation” might have brought the Prodigal Son some instant gratification and temporary pleasure, it did not bring him ultimate happiness. What brought him ultimate happiness? Returning to loving relationship with his family and friends.

What will bring us ultimate happiness? For gasoline prices and other prices to come down? To have more money to spend on all of those higher-priced things? No. What will bring us ultimate happiness actually does not have to cost us much, if anything, other than some time and commitment on our part: more loving relationships with God and one another.

Instead of wallowing in our current financial hardships, I suggest that we pray for God’s help and guidance to grow in our loving relationships with him and with one another despite our current financial constraints. How we pray together as a parish family may need to be simpler during this time to keep costs down. Meals and other celebrations with family and friends may also need to be simpler during this time to reduce costs. But can we grow in our loving relationships with God and one another and ultimately find happiness and joy in those relationships despite our current economic reality? With God’s help, absolutely! We just have to invite God to lead us to those more loving relationships and the ultimate happiness and joy that they bring us.

La inflación está causando una crisis financiera para la mayoría de nosotros en estos días. Con los precios de la gasolina significativamente más altos, tenemos que pensar dos veces antes de hacer cualquier cosa que implique conducir nuestros automóviles y quemar esa costosa gasolina. En casi todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas, tenemos que pensar detenidamente en cómo gastamos nuestro dinero. En nuestras familias, tenemos que pensar en los tipos de comestibles que compramos, dejando de lado los alimentos más caros por el momento. En nuestra vida laboral y escolar, tenemos que mantener los costos lo más bajos posible. En nuestra vida parroquial, mientras planeamos nuestras liturgias para Semana Santa y Pascua, tendremos que simplificar ciertas cosas este año para reducir costos y vivir dentro de nuestros medios económicos.

Es fácil quejarse de estas realidades económicas actuales y revolcarse en nuestras dificultades financieras percibidas. Pero tal vez la parábola del hijo pródigo, el evangelio de este domingo, pueda ayudarnos a repensar nuestras quejas y revolcarnos y realmente encontrar felicidad y alegría incluso en estos tiempos económicos difíciles. Una de las muchas lecciones de la parábola del hijo pródigo es que no encontramos la máxima felicidad en tener mucho dinero para gastar imprudentemente. El hijo pródigo tenía mucho dinero para gastar en una vida “de una manera disoluta”, como lo describe el Evangelio de Lucas. Aunque esa vida “de una manera disoluta” podría haberle brindado al hijo pródigo alguna gratificación instantánea y placer temporal, no le brindó la máxima felicidad. ¿Qué le trajo la máxima felicidad? Volviendo a la relación amorosa con su familia y amigos.

¿Qué nos traerá la felicidad última? ¿Para que bajen los precios de la gasolina y otros precios? ¿Tener más dinero para gastar en todas esas cosas de mayor precio? No. Lo que nos traerá la máxima felicidad en realidad no tiene que costarnos mucho, si es que nos cuesta algo, aparte de algo de tiempo y compromiso de nuestra parte: relaciones más amorosas con Dios y con los demás.

En lugar de revolcarnos en nuestras dificultades financieras actuales, sugiero que oremos por la ayuda y la guía de Dios para crecer en nuestras relaciones amorosas con él y entre nosotros a pesar de nuestras limitaciones financieras actuales. Es posible que la forma en que oramos juntos como familia parroquial deba ser más simple durante este tiempo para mantener bajos los costos. Las comidas y otras celebraciones con familiares y amigos también pueden necesitar ser más simples durante este tiempo para reducir costos. Pero, ¿podemos crecer en nuestras relaciones amorosas con Dios y entre nosotros y finalmente encontrar felicidad y gozo en esas relaciones a pesar de nuestra realidad económica actual? ¡Con la ayuda de Dios, absolutamente! Solo tenemos que invitar a Dios a que nos guíe hacia esas relaciones más amorosas y la felicidad y el gozo últimos que nos traen.

This liturgy will include the blessing of the new paschal candle, an extended Liturgy of the Word outlining our salvation history, Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, First Communion) for adults and children of catechetical age, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This liturgy will last a few hours – let us celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ without concern about time!

Esta liturgia incluirá la bendición de el nueva cirio pascual, una Liturgia de la Palabra extendida delineando nuestra historia de salvación, Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación, Primera Comunión) para los adultos y niños en edad de catequesis, y la Liturgia de la Eucaristía. In a few weeks our parish will initiate Witness to Love. You may be asking, what is Witness to Love? According to their website: “It is a virtue based, catechumenate model of marriage renewal and formation. The Witness to Love model helps couples facilitate an authentic dialogue about their relationships with God and provides an attraction to the Church through the gift of mentoring. It helps mentor couples guide and encourage engaged couples to integrate and connect them with their parish, while reaping fruits of renewal and growth within their own marriage.”

What does this mean for our parish? Our current marriage preparation process will be replaced by this ‘mentoring’ ministry that will assist our engaged couples as well as our mentoring couples to grow in their relationship and their involvement in parish life.

Knights of Columbus Food Drive: April 2 & 3

The next Knights of Columbus Food Drive will be on Saturday, April 2nd from 5:00-7:00PM & Sunday, April 3rd from 6:00 - 11:30AM. Items collected will be distributed to those locally in need. Bring your donations to the Parish Office garage on your way to Mass. Needed: Canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruit, tuna, meats, stew); Dry foods (hot or cold cereal, beans, rice, spaghetti/pasta); Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet tissue, disposable diapers). All are invited to experience the Labyrinth Walk sponsored by St. Irenaeus Health Ministry’s Labyrinth Ministry on Tuesday, April 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the parish hall located on the campus of St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, 5201 Evergreen Ave., Cypress.

This is a free event. The Labyrinth is a full-body prayer that involves literally walking in prayer following a circular floor pattern. This experience can enhance your inward Lenten journey and help prepare you spiritually for Easter. The Holy Week Labyrinth Walk is an opportunity to quiet your mind, center yourself, and find a quiet respite from the problems that bombard us daily.

As St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “If we really want to pray, we must first learn to listen; for in the silence of the heart, God speaks.” It only takes about 20 to 30 minutes to pray and walk the labyrinth. Give yourself the gift of resting in the quiet serenity, meditating, praying and listening to hear God’s voice.

There is no one “right” way to do the Labyrinth Walk. We each have our unique prayers and concerns.
