RIP Sister Kathleen Marie Pughe, CSJ, Former Principal of Our Lady of Guadalupe School
Sr. Kathleen Marie was born Therese Ann Pughe on Dec. 20, 1932, in Utica, New York to Arthur and Florence Pughe. The firstborn of 13 children, Sr. Kathleen Marie knew how to keep her younger siblings in order. When she was 10 years old her family moved to California. It was at St. Bernard’s in Bellflower where she was introduced to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. Two sisters of St. Joseph who had a great influence on her were, Sr. Mary Edward Leveque and Sr. Margaret Mary Marcotte. Sr. Mary Edward convinced her to go to St. Joseph Preparatory School in Orange.
Her first teaching assignment was in San Francisco when she was still a novice. She was sent there to replace a Sister who was ill. As she was walking around being introduced to the school, some girls saw her and started calling out, “she has no cross, she has no cross, she’s a novice!” This incident and her inexperience did not deter Sr. Kathleen Marie; it was there she experienced the beginning of her lifelong ministry in education.
She taught at several schools in both Northern and Southern California and, in 1964, she became the principal of St. Bernard’s School in Bellflower. Other schools where she served as principal were St. Joseph School (Santa Ana), St. Mary’s School (Fullerton), Holy Family School (Orange), Our Lady of Guadalupe School (La Habra), and St. Joachim School (Costa Mesa).
Sr. Kathleen Marie whole-heartedly gave herself to the ministry of Catholic education. In 2019 she received the Papal Honor, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, for her distinguished service in education. This award is the highest honor that can be awarded to the laity by the pope.
Her tireless zeal as an educator has touched generations within families, enabling girls and boys to flourish as they moved into young adulthood. Her ability to network with people from all walks of life reflects the charism that propels us to bring people together and to God. Her influence lives on in the very lives of the people she served over the years.
Sr. Kathleen Marie entered eternal life on March 31, 2022. Her funeral will be on April 13th at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Orange followed by burial at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.

In a few weeks our parish will initiate Witness to Love. You may be asking, what is Witness to Love? According to their website: “It is a virtue based, catechumenate model of marriage renewal and formation. The Witness to Love model helps couples facilitate an authentic dialogue about their relationships with God and provides an attraction to the Church through the gift of mentoring. It helps mentor couples guide and encourage engaged couples to integrate and connect them with their parish, while reaping fruits of renewal and growth within their own marriage.”
What does this mean for our parish? Our current marriage preparation process will be replaced by this ‘mentoring’ ministry that will assist our engaged couples as well as our mentoring couples to grow in their relationship and their involvement in parish life.
Stay tuned for more information about this marriage preparation ministry.
God bless,
Deacon Chuck & Yolande Doidge
