Statement of USCCB on Shootings in Buffalo, NY and Laguna Woods, CA
In response to the recent shootings in Buffalo, N.Y., and here locally in Laguna Woods, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) offered the following statement from its spokesperson, Chieko Noguchi, director of public affairs.
“The U.S. bishops join with others throughout the country in offering prayers for the support and healing of the families, friends, and communities of those impacted by these violent incidents. We pray especially for those who were injured and particularly for those who lost their lives. We pray also for those on the front lines who risk their lives in responding to the calls for help, and to those in the medical fields who minister to those who have been harmed.
“The bishops again call for an honest dialogue rooted in Christ in addressing the persistent evil of racism in our country. The Catholic Church has been a consistent voice for rational yet effective forms of regulation of dangerous weapons, and the USCCB continues to advocate for an end to violence, and for the respect and dignity of all lives.
“We pray for and support the healing of the communities impacted and for all the victims of violence and that Christ’s peace be upon all affected.”
Farewell Celebration for Sister Margaret Barrett, C.S.J., and Sister Mary Murphy, C.S.J.
Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 2022, 10 am Mass, Reception Following
We will sadly say farewell to Sister Margaret Barrett, C.S.J., and Sister Mary Murphy, C.S.J., Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who will leave our OLG community in late June. We will have a special farewell celebration for Sister Margaret and Sister Mary at our 10 am Mass on Pentecost Sunday, June 5, 2022, with a reception to follow.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet first came to La Habra and opened the Villa Maria House of Prayer in 1978. Although the House of Prayer has been a separate organization from OLG parish, the Sisters and the House of Prayer have been very important in our OLG parish life, with the Sisters serving as spiritual directors and advisors for many of our OLG parishioners and the House of Prayer frequently being a site for parish retreats through the years.
Sister Margaret came to La Habra in 1987. In addition to her work at the House of Prayer, Sister Margaret immediately joined the Gloria Dei Choir when she arrived in 1987 and has remained a beloved member to this day. Through the years, Sister Margaret also has served as a cantor at school Masses, sacristan, minister of Holy Communion to the sick and homebound, lector, and spiritual advisor to the St. Paul’s Mission Circle. Sister Margaret celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet this past March 19, 2022.
Sister Mary came to La Habra in 2006. In addition to her work at the House of Prayer, Sister Mary also has served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and spiritual advisor to the St. Paul’s Mission Circle. Sister Mary just co-wrote a book, The Trek of the Seven Sisters: A Pilgrimage Companion Guide, which will soon be available for purchase in the St. Paul’s Mission Circle Gift Shop.
We will greatly miss Sister Margaret and Sister Mary. Let us thank God for their many years of presence and service in our OLG community and pray for God’s abundant blessings upon them as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
