Having spent the past week on retreat with the priests of the Diocese of Orange, I was able to catch up with many of my brother priests and hear about what has been happening in their parishes. Their stories were pretty much the same as our story here at OLG.
COVID is still with us and impacting most parishes, just as it is impacting many of you. In fact, many of the priests missed this year's retreat because they had tested positive for COVID and were in quarantine. Mass attendance at most parishes is still below pre-COVID levels, at least in part due to ongoing COVID cases. Parish group participation is also still below pre-COVID levels.
Inflation is causing a financial crunch for most parishes, just as it is causing a financial crunch for many of you. Most parishes are not yet able provide pre-COVID level of services.
But the general mood among the priests on retreat this past week was very positive and optimistic. All of our parishes are in better shape now than they were a year ago, and in much better shape than they were two years ago. I think that can be said for most of our lives as well. I try to look at these things as the glass half full rather than half empty, and that was the spirit of my brother priests on retreat this past week.
We priests of the Diocese of Orange are generally happy with where our parishes and lives are right now, and I hope that you are, too. For the time being, we simply have to live with COVID impacting us from time to time. And with inflation, we simply have to do our best with the financial and other resources that we have. But if we remain mindful and thankful for all of the ways that God continues to bless us in our lives, even if things are far from perfect, we will generally be happy. Thanks be to God!
Habiendo pasado la semana pasada en un retiro con los sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Orange, pude hablar con muchos de mis hermanos sacerdotes y escuchar sobre lo que ha estado sucediendo en sus parroquias. Sus historias eran bastante parecidas a la nuestra aquí en OLG.
COVID todavía está con nosotros e impacta a la mayoría de las parroquias, al igual que a muchos de ustedes. De hecho, muchos de los sacerdotes no pudieron asistir al retiro de este año porque habían dado positivo por COVID y estaban en cuarentena. Mother’s and Father’s Day Novena
Since we messed up and did not do the Mother’s Day Novena in May – sorry about that! – this year we will combine the Mother’s and Father’s Day Novenas into one. Mother’s and Father’s Day Novena intention envelopes will be available in the pews and the racks at the church entrances this weekend and next. You may place completed envelopes in the Sunday collection basket or turn them in at the Parish Office so that your loved ones, living or deceased, may be remembered in a novena of Masses to be celebrated here at OLG beginning next weekend.

We are looking for new and returning members to join us in our Music Ministry with the Gloria Dei Choir! Our Choir usually sings for the 10:00am Sunday Mass and for all the major Feasts and Celebrations of the liturgical year at Our Lady of Guadalupe. The music we sing is always linked to the liturgy of the word and the Eucharist and is mostly traditional music by masters such as Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Palestrina, Tallis, Wilberg, and Parry. We are also occasionally requested to sing for Weddings and Memorial Masses as part of our Ministry. The Gloria Dei Choir has regular weekly rehearsals on Thursdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the church.
Although this Pentecost Sunday is our last liturgy before our summer break, we hope to have more members join us in the Fall! We plan on returning to rehearsals the week after Labor Day on Thursday, September 8th, and to our regular ministry singing at the 10:00am Sunday Masses starting September 18th. To join, please contact the church office or email olggdc@gmail.com and leave your name, phone number, and email address, and look for a response from Lorraine Joy Welling, our GDC Choir Director. Knights of Columbus Food Drive: July 9 & 10

The following is an excerpt from the letter:
"This incomprehensible tragedy at Uvalde, Texas, comes as we are still grieving the loss of innocent lives in Buffalo, Dallas, Laguna Woods and now Tulsa. These tragedies can only bring us to one conclusion: We must unite in our humanity to stop the massacres of innocent lives."
"We urge all members of Congress to reflect on the compassion all of you undoubtedly feel in light of these tragic events and be moved to action because of it. There is something deeply wrong with a culture where these acts of violence are increasingly common. There must be dialogue followed by concrete action to bring about a broader social renewal that addresses all aspects of the crisis, including mental health, the state of families, the valuation of life, the influence of entertainment and gaming industries, bullying, and the availability of firearms. Among the many steps toward addressing this endemic of violence is the passage of reasonable gun control measures. In this, we implore you to join the Holy Father who, in his continued expression of grief over the tragedy in Texas, declared, 'It is time to say no more to the indiscriminate trafficking of weapons.'"

National Eucharistic Revival
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has launched the National Eucharistic Revival, a three-year grassroots initiative of devotion and faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, starting on the feast of Corpus Christi.

Join the Diocese of Orange as we begin the National Eucharistic Revival on Saturday, June 18 with Mass and a Eucharistic Procession led by Bishop Timothy Freyer. Mass begins at 4:30 p.m. at Christ Cathedral, with a procession around the campus to follow.
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in Texas, on June 19, 1865, that essentially ended slavery in the United States. The day serves as a reminder of the ongoing call to see the image of God in our neighbors and to work for justice in our communities. As Catholics, we mark this day by praying for the conversion of hearts to overcome the sin of racism.
Christ Cathedral will commemorate Juneteenth at the June 19 5:15 p.m. Sunday Mass by welcoming guest presider and preacher, Fr. Claude Williams, O. Praem. and guest musicians from St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Costa Mesa and Transfiguration Catholic Church in Los Angeles.

The Diocese of Orange's Marian Days was inspired after a longstanding event of the same name in Carthage, Mo.

This summer, family events and programs are planned in the Diocese of Orange as a local recognition of the 10th World Meeting of Families to be held in Rome on June 22 to 26. While delegates in Rome discuss theology and the dynamics of family life in the modern world, customized and local events will be offered in our Diocese, providing formation, prayer and fellowship similarly focused on family life.
Here in Orange County, families are invited to the following local events and programs to grow in “Family Love: A Vocation and a Path to Holiness.”
Docent tours of Christ Cathedral are returning this summer!
Guided walks of the Garden Grove campus first began in 2012 after the Diocese of Orange acquired the property, but they stopped due to the pandemic closures in March 2020.
Now, more than two years later, the public can again visit to see and learn about the site’s history, religious art and architecture.
Tours begin again starting July 25. Tours of Christ Cathedral will be offered on Mondays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Campus tours, which do not include the cathedral, will be on Fridays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
All tours begin at the Cultural Center.
Currently, the Diocese has a team of around 40 docents, who each wear distinctive orange ties or scarves.
