Mass and Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: September 17, 10:00 a.m.
A bilingual Mass and Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated here at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church next Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. Any member of the faithful can receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick as soon as he or she begins to be in danger of death because of sickness or old age. The faithful who receive this sacrament can receive it several times if their illness becomes worse or another serious sickness afflicts them. PLEASE NOTE: This Mass is not a Charismatic Healing Mass, in which participants are often anointed with blessed oil. This anointing at a Charismatic Healing Mass is not a sacrament of the Church, while the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is.
Having received from the Lord the charge to heal the sick, the Church strives to carry it out by taking care of the sick and accompanying them with her prayer of intercession. Above all, the Church possesses the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick specifically intended for the benefit of the sick. This sacrament was instituted by Christ and is attested by Saint James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call in the presbyters of the Church and let them pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14-15) The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick confers a special grace which unites the sick person more intimately to the Passion of Christ for his good and for the good of all the Church. It gives comfort, peace, courage, and even the forgiveness of sins if the sick person is not able to make a confession. Sometimes, if it is the will of God, this sacrament even brings about the restoration of physical health. In any case this Anointing prepares the sick person for the journey to the Father’s House.
Of course, many of our sick brothers and sisters are homebound or in convalescent homes and therefore cannot come to the church for the sacraments. For those, lay ministers from our parish Ministry of Care take Communion, and our parish priests go to administer the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. Please call the parish office for more information or to schedule these services.

Every Liturgy celebrates the Paschal Mystery. But how do we come to learn about this mystery? Mystery is not something to learn but to encounter or experience. In order to encounter this mystery, we celebrate the liturgy in words and gestures, and in ritual actions.
This 6 week, 2 hour each session course will allow the learner to come to know Christ in a detailed experiential way through the ritual of our Liturgy sometimes called the Mass or the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
When we think of ministry at the liturgy, our minds wander to “those others” who are the priest celebrants, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers, and cantors. But we miss out on the most important ministry, the ministry of the assembly. By our baptism each of us is called to come together as one, listen to God’s Word, celebrate in a sacred and sacrificial meal, then be sent out as missionary disciples to be what we become, the Body of Christ, to transform the world into the Kingdom of God.
This course is designed for any baptized adult or adult catechumen who desires to grow in their relationship with Christ.
Since Christ always wants us to do his ministry with someone else, invite someone to personally join and journey with you through this exciting way God calls us to give thanks and praise.
