Did you know?
The 12 Days of Christmas song has special meaning for Catholics. During the late 16th century, persecuted Catholics in England were actually prohibited from practicing their religion, in all of its forms: written stories, word of mouth, singing, etc. The price to pay for breaking the King's law was often imprisonment, but a severe infraction could lead to death by hanging or beheading. As a form of secret protest, Catholics created the seemingly nonsensical lyrics that hide teachings found in the Bible. In this way older, practicing Catholics were able to pass along their religious traditions and teaching to their children without risking punishment. The meaning of the lyrical symbols are explained on the back panel of the quilt. Check out the PDF below as well.

Mass Cards for First Communion Students
Every student in grades 1-8 has received their Sunday Mass Prayer Card if they have been in attendance to class the last two class sessions. It’s been WONDERFUL to see the children get up during Mass and take their prayer petition and place it in the baskets located near the sanctuary. Please note that there will not be any kind of “announcement” made during Mass instructing the children to bring their Mass prayer cards forward. When the ushers begin to pass the baskets around for the Sunday collection, that is when the children should get up and walk their prayer intention card up to the front and place it in one of the two baskets. One basket is placed in front of the
ambo, where the readings take place and Gospel is proclaimed and the other basket is located near the Baptismal font and in front of where the cantor sings from. If your child isn’t quite comfortable doing this on their own yet, they can be accompanied by an adult or sibling. Thank you to all of our students/families who have turned in their prayer petitions the last two weeks – it’s been wonderful to see so many children participate! If you do not attend Mass here at OLG or miss Mass for any reason, please fill out the form by clicking on the following link:
