Today (Saturday, April 29) is the Memorial of St. Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. St. Catherine is one of my favorite saints. Her body is entombed in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, which I visited often when I did further studies in Rome from 2009-2011.

In the section of St. Catherine’s Dialogue on “The variety of gifts in the Church,” St. Catherine recorded God’s message to her on why he has given each of us some gifts but none of us all gifts: “To one person I give charity as the primary virtue, to another justice, to another humility, to another a lively faith or prudence or temperance or patience, and to still another courage. The same is true of many of my gifts and graces, virtues and other spiritual gifts, and those things necessary for the body and human life. I have distributed them all in such a way that no one has all of them. Thus have I given you reason - necessity, in fact - to practice mutual charity. For I could well have supplied each of you with all your needs, both spiritual and material. But I wanted to make you dependent on one another so that each of you would be my minister, dispensing the graces and gifts you have received from me. So whether you will it or not, you cannot escape the exercise of charity!” (Click here to read this entire section of St. Catherine’s Dialogue.)

Essentially, then, we need one another. None of us is completely self-sufficient. Each of us has some gifts but not others. In order for each of us to benefit from all of God’s gifts, we must love and care for one another, each of us using our own gifts for the good of others while receiving other’s gifts for our own good. Only if we love and care for one another in this way will we all benefit from all of God’s gifts.

Our Southern California culture is rife with selfishness, self-absorption and narcissism. It is no wonder that sometimes it seems that God has abandoned us, as if he has withdrawn his gifts from us. But he has not. Indeed, he continues to pour his gifts upon us in abundance. The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena teaches us, though, that for us to benefit fully from God’s gifts, we need to turn away from our selfishness, self-absorption and narcissism and be more loving and caring toward one another, each of us using our gifts in love and service of God and one another. The more we do that, the more we all will benefit from all of God’s gifts.

Rites, Rites and More Rites – What’s a Catholic to Do During Lent, Holy Week & Easter?

The seasons of Lent, Sacred Triduum and Easter Seasons are some of the busiest times of the Liturgical Calendar. Come explore the rites, rituals, and the seasonal readings in order to better understand how our liturgical life reflects our own Christian identity. This is a 15-week course.

This class is intended for any adult learner, 18 years and older, for catechumens, baptized Christians of other faith traditions and all Catholics, both who are practicing as well as those not practicing. All are welcomed! Come when you can, each class is individualized with its own topic, and so a person who may miss a class will not be left behind.

Instructor: Rick Goodwin, long-time Our Lady of Guadalupe parishioner and a teacher theologian from Servite High School and the Diocese of Orange, will be leading this class.

Ritos, ritos y más ritos: ¿qué debe hacer un católico durante la Cuaresma, la Semana Santa y la Pascua? (curso sera en ingles)

Los tiempos de Cuaresma, Triduo Sagrado y Tiempos Pascuales son algunos de los tiempos más ocupados del Calendario Litúrgico. Ven a explorar los ritos, los rituales y las lecturas estacionales para comprender mejor cómo nuestra vida litúrgica refleja nuestra propia identidad cristiana. Este es un curso de 15 semanas.

What is Life Teen? Life Teen is a Catholic high school youth ministry program. It provides a safe fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith, and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Life Teen resources speak to the physical, psychological, cognitive, relational, and spiritual maturation of high school youth. Life Teen resources make it easier for youth ministers to plan out their semesters of Life Night, retreats, and to train a team of adults, the Core Team, to assist them in the ministry. The Knights of Columbus Food Drive: May 6-7

Because of Palm Sunday and Easter falling on the on the first 2 Sundays of April, it was decided to cancel the food collection for the month of April. The next Knights of Columbus Food Drive will be on Saturday, May 6th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. & Sunday, May 7th from 6:00 - 11:30 a.m. Items collected will be distributed to those locally in need. Bring your donations to the Parish Office garage on your way to Mass. Needed: Canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruit, tuna, meats, stew); Dry foods (hot or cold cereal, beans, rice, spaghetti/pasta); Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet tissue, disposable diapers). Join us for our next Rosary Rally: May 20, 2023

Now that April's Rosary Rally is completed, we can look forward to our next one in May; the month of our Blessed Mother Mary.

It will be held in front of our church on May 20, 2023.

Start Time: 12:00 Noon

With all of the darkness happening in the world, this is a perfect month to offer our prayers and ourselves to our Blessed Mother as a sign of our devotion to Her and Her Son. If you haven't come to one of our Rallies before, this again is the perfect month to attend one to honor and pray to Our Lady. We always hold these on the third Saturday of every month. Sometimes we may be praying in front of the fountain of our Lord Jesus and His Sacred Heart if there are baptisms, weddings or other events happening in the church. Feel free to bring a chair if needed. I do try to have at least two spare chairs for those unable to bring one.

Feel free to bring family and friends. The more people are praying the Rosary to Our Mother, the more this darkness will be rolled back. We hope to see many more people coming to honor our Blessed Mother Mary on Her month. Many thanks go out to all who support us in this important ministry.

Ahora que se ha completado el Rally del Rosario de abril, podemos esperar el próximo en mayo; el mes de nuestra Santísima Madre María.

Se llevará a cabo frente de nuestra iglesia el 20 de mayo de 2023.

Hora de inicio: 12:00 del mediodía

Con toda la oscuridad que está ocurriendo en el mundo, este es un mes perfecto para ofrecer nuestras oraciones y nosotros mismos a nuestra Santísima Madre como una señal de nuestra devoción a Ella y Su Hijo. Si no ha venido a uno de nuestros Rallies antes, este es nuevamente el mes perfecto para asistir a uno para honrar y orar a Nuestra Señora. Siempre los celebramos el tercer sábado de cada mes. A veces podemos estar orando frente a la fuente de nuestro Señor Jesús y Su Sagrado Corazón si hay bautizos, bodas u otros eventos en la iglesia. Siéntase libre de traer una silla si es necesario. Trato de tener al menos dos sillas de repuesto para aquellos que no pueden traer una.

Christ Cathedral is hosting a special Mass on May 4 for the Feast Day of St. Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer and at-risk youth.The celebrant is a visiting Servite Order priest, Fr. Joseph Chamblain, pastor of Assumption Church in Chicago. A fellow Servite priest, Fr. Michael Pontarelli, pastor of St. Juliana Falconieri parish in Fullerton, is the organizer and a concelebrant. The Mass begins at 6 p.m. A blessing with a St. Peregrine relic will be given for all who wish to come forward and receive one. Frs. Joseph and Michael are hoping this special Mass will become an annual tradition in the Diocese of Orange. Visit this link to read the full story.

The Marriage Course by ALPHA is for couples seeking practical support to strengthen their relationship, keep the spark alive and stay connected. The next seven-part series starts on May 24 and meets weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. through July 15.

This event will invite people from all walks of life to gather in anticipation of the nearness of God. Through powerful speakers, transformative prayer and Sacramental celebrations, we will experience the life that flows from His existence, meeting Him in the reality of His Presence.
