My dear friends in Christ, happy Sunday!
It is never easy to say “goodbye” to long serving staff members, but this week the duty falls to me to bid farewell to two individuals who have made an impact in our parish through the beauty of their musical contributions in our liturgical life, namely Charles and Lorraine Welling. Last Sunday, Charles and Lorraine informed Connie Salazar, our Director of Music, of their immediate resignation as Organist and Choir Director, respectively. While our parish is certainly sad to see them go, I would like to convey to them my very best wishes for their next endeavors. Godspeed, Charles and Lorraine!
While change can be hard, I would like to reassure our parishioners that our wonderful Gloria Dei Choir will remain a vital part of our parish’s liturgical and ministerial life. Given the Wellings’ recent resignations, on Thursday evening this past week, I met with the current and active members of the Gloria Dei Choir for a “wine and cheese” gathering and “listening session” to hear their “hopes and dreams” for the choir as we begin to search for a new Choir Director and Organist for the parish. It was a joy to meet with the Gloria Dei Choir in this manner, and to hear of their ideas for our choir’s future. As I reassured them at our meeting, and as I would like to reassure all our parishioners in this letter, beautiful liturgical music is a passion of mine, and I am 100% supportive of our musical program continuing to flourish in the future. It will be an exciting opportunity to see how our parish’s choral life grows and develops in the years to come.
Thank you for your patience as we begin our search for a new Choir Director and Organist. Naturally, such a search will take time, as we look not just for any Choir Director and Organist, but for the right person(s) for that task. As the saying goes, “hire slowly!”
Once again, while I am sad to bid farewell to Charles and Lorraine Welling, and I wish them nothing but the best, I am confident that our parish’s musical life will continue to mature and blossom under the excellent direction of Connie Salazar. Connie will be instrumental in our search for a Choir Director and Organist, and I am excited to be working with her and others to identify the right person(s) for the job. Please pray for us as we begin this search, and please ask the good Lord to bless us with musicians who are not only passionate about beauty, but who, like Charles and Lorraine, also share the joy of the Gospel.
Musical developments aside, let’s chat about some other exciting “coming attractions” in our parish’s life:
Firstly, “Catholics Invade the Bar” continued this week with a great crowd at La Perla Azul Restaurant. Thank you again to all our attendees! This week we were treated to an exploration of Canon Law by the Very Rev. Scott Borgman, JCD, who showed us how the law and the Gospel need not be competitors. He reminded us that the last Canon in the Church’s Codex Iuris Canonici, the Code of Canon Law, Canon §1752, reads: “Salus animarum suprema lex”--”the salvation of souls is the supreme law” in the Church of Christ, and that all law in the Church exists ultimately for this purpose. Next week’s speaker, the Rev. Prof. Dr. Luke Dysinger, OSB, MD, DPhil (OXON)--a Benedictine Monk, priest, medical doctor, theological doctor, professor at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, and wonderfully wise (and funny!) spiritual guide--will teach us about the Church’s doctrine of sanctification with a talk entitled: “Divinization: Growing in Union with Christ”. Last week, I announced that this year we will be hosting a Christmas Market, the Mercado del Niño Jesus, from December 8th through December 17th, in the large parking lot in front of the Parish School. You can already see our booths going up and being painted. But that’s not all that’s happening in December, and there’s more to share! This year, we will be hosting Advent Missions in English and Spanish with visiting priests who will guide us into the spirit of the season with inspirational talks and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
On December 11th, right before our annual patronal Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the all-night long celebrations that are our tradition here, we will be graced with the presence of Fr. Gastón Mendiola-Arroyo, parochial vicar at La Purísima Church in Orange, who will speak of Mary’s role in preparing us for Advent and Christmas, with a one-evening Advent Mission beginning at 8:30pm (his talk will be followed by the Guadalupe festival events that are our normal practice for the night before December 12th and leading into the Feast Day itself). His Mission will be entitled: “María nos prepara para el Adviento”. Fr. Gastón is a treasure of the Diocese of Orange, and a much sought after spiritual guide and speaker. It will be a great blessing to have him with us.
Then on December 13th and 14th at 7pm each night we will be blessed with a visit from a good friend of mine, all the way from the United Kingdom. Fr. Sean Patrick Riley, SThL, JCL, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Liverpool in England, will give us a two-night Advent Mission in English coupled with the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. His talk is entitled: “‘Where is the Love?’ Advent Reflections”. Fr. Sean is a friend of mine from my time in Rome, and he is a hoot! I can’t wait for him to visit us here at OLG, and you’ll love hearing from him. Not only is he an intelligent and delightful human being, but his accent is a total blast to listen to... he sounds like one of the The Beatles!
Oremus pro invicem—let us pray for each other—that we might always keep our eyes fixed on the Blessed Mother, as she guides us ever more fully to where love truly resides, in the Sacred Heart of her Divine Son and Lord.

World Mission Sunday
Our Second Collection will be for World Mission Sunday this weekend. We celebrate this day by remembering our baptismal call – to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the work and witness of the Mission Church, as it provides for priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity.

A novena of Masses will be celebrated beginning November 2 (one Mass each day) for the intention of all those whose names are submitted on our All Souls envelopes. You may use either the designated envelope in your monthly packet or one of those available in the entrance racks. Place the completed envelopes in the collection basket or turn them in at the parish office.

Become a Mentor for our Marriage Prep Renewal Ministry
Come and strengthen your marriage and journey with a young couple as they prepare to receive the sacrament of marriage. Your marriage is a witness and a light to young engaged couples. As you mentor the engaged couple who choose you, you too will grow in your marriage and in your appreciation of the sacrament you received many years earlier. Some of the things you'll do together are, go out on a double date. Have dinner with one of our beloved priests.
Jesus says, “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Mathew 5:16. Join the movement and let your light shine.

The Knights of Columbus Food Drive: November
The next Knights of Columbus Food Drive will be on Saturday, November 4th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. & Sunday, November 5th from 6:00 - 11:30 a.m. Items collected will be distributed to those locally in need. Bring your donations to the Parish Office garage on your way to Mass. Needed: Canned goods (soups, vegetables, fruit, tuna, meats, stew); Dry foods (hot or cold cereal, beans, rice, spaghetti/pasta); Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet tissue, disposable diapers). Thanksgiving Food Drive
The Knights of Columbus will also be having their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive the weekend of November 18 & 19. Items collected will be turkeys, side dishes (stuffing, boxed mash potatoes, cranberry sauce) desserts (pumpkin or apple pies). Thank you in advance for helping provide a Thanksgiving meal for those in need.
