What an auspicious week we’ve had, and what a week to come! Not only have we reached the Second Sunday of Advent, but this past Friday, 12/8, we not only celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Patroness of the United States, but that evening we also opened our Advent/Christmas Market, the Mercado del Niño Jesús! It was such a joy to see so many of you at the candle-lit procession from the Church to the Mercado on Friday evening after the 5:30pm Feast Day Mass! What a blessing to walk with you celebrating Our Lady and the Advent season, singing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and to join with you in the blessing of our Mercado Christmas trees! Here are a few pictures from Friday evening’s procession and blessing for your perusal.

We hope to see you frequently during the Mercado over the next nine days of its duration. Make sure to try our special mulled wine and Mexican hot drinks, or to have one of our beers on draft, and I hope you enjoy the many food options available as well as the items for purchase from our many vendors. Come join us in festive eating, drinking, and shopping for Christmas!

May Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception and the Virgin of Guadalupe, pray for us always, that we might come to know Her Son better, and worship Him with due love and fitting devotion.

I wish you all a joyous Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a blessed Feast of our parish’s patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and a happy Second Sunday of Advent! 

In addition to the opening of the Mercado, this week we also had our final night of “Catholics Invade the Bar” on Wednesday evening at La Perla Azul Restaurant. It is hard to believe that our nine-week series has come to its close, but as with all bittersweet endings, it is good to reflect with gratitude on the joys we shared. I myself would like to express great gratitude to Don Roberto Landeros and the staff of La Perla Azul Restaurant for hosting us, as well as to our staff, volunteers, and all our guest speakers. Speaking only for myself, I can say that this series was a blast, and I hope that we can host it again in the future. This past Wednesday’s talk was utterly fascinating to me, and it was a joy to have one of my oldest and closest friends, Dr. James Van Dyke, the Post-Award Visitor of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Oxford (UK), share with us about the difference between artificial and human intelligence, according to the Catholic tradition. We had a packed house on Wednesday, and we were graced by a very special visitor, His Excellency, Bishop Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of Orange, who led us in our opening prayer and in singing  “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and who joined us for the talk. It is a delight to be able to share these pictures from Wednesday with you.

Given that this coming week is filled with activity, I would like to use this opportunity to provide you with the details about the schedule of our coming events.

December 8-17: Mercado del Niño Jesús (times vary per day, and are available at our website);

December 11, 8:30pm: Spanish Advent Mission with Fr. Gastón Mendiola-Arroyo (Diocese of Orange);

December 12: Our Lady of Guadalupe Festivities All-Night, with Masses at Midnight, 6am, 8am and 7pm;

December 13-14, 7pm-8:30pm: English Advent Mission and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Fr. Sean Patrick Riley (Archdiocese of Liverpool, UK);

December 17-23: Sung Advent Vespers (Evening Prayer) in the Church, each night at 6pm;

December 18, 22, and 23: Posadas from 7pm-8pm in the Coleman Center;

December 24, Christmas Eve: Masses at 4pm (English), 6:30pm (Spanish); and Midnight (Bilingual);

December 25, Christmas Day: Masses at 10am (English); and 12pm (Spanish).

Oremus pro invicem—let us pray for each other—that as we share in the joy of this holy and busy season, our eyes might always remain fixed on the coming of the Infant Jesus, the Lord of Glory.
