The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all! I miss greeting you that way at the beginning of our Sunday Masses – although I will be able to greet you that way via livestream Mass tomorrow (Sunday, March 29 – see below for more information). I almost always use that form of the opening greeting at my Sunday Masses, but during this time of the coronavirus pandemic, it carries particular meaning and really expresses my prayer for you, that you will experience and know especially during this time the help of God – his grace, his love and his bringing us together in spiritual communion with one another even when we must be physically separated from one another for a time.
I think one of the most difficult things for most of us during this time is the uncertainty at this point. When will we be able to get back to “normal”? What will our “new normal” be or look like? Will there be some kind of “interim new normal” before we completely move beyond this coronavirus scourge and are able to settle into our “permanent new normal”?
Actually, I hope that for most of us, those will remain as our primary questions about the uncertainty of this time: We know that the uncertainty is direr for some of our brothers and sisters afflicted with COVID-19 and having the most serious symptoms, including hovering near death, as well as for family and friends of these brothers and sisters who are unable even to visit them or speak with them in their darkest hour – perhaps some of you reading this message. If that is you, please be assured of my prayers, and I think I can speak for our OLG parish community to say that you are in all of our prayers during this time.
Whatever the nature and sources of our uncertainty during this time, please be assured that I am praying for God to continue to guide us with his gifts of wisdom, knowledge, counsel and understanding, as well as continue to give us his gift of fortitude to move forward through this time and into whatever our new normal will be.
In that spirit, I will conclude this note the same way I conclude all of my private Masses these days, with my prayer of blessing for you (even though except for the livestream Masses, there is no way for you to hear or see that blessing, but be assured of my prayer of blessing nevertheless!): May almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!
