I think that generally here in La Habra, we are giving one another the gift not only of looking out for one another and caring for one another during this time of the coronavirus pandemic but also doing so with a positive attitude. The old saying, “God loves a cheerful giver,” certainly applies to our La Habra community, especially in how we are relating to one another during this time.
That does not mean that these times are not difficult for us here in La Habra: It is difficult not to be able to gather together in person here at OLG for the Sacraments and parish activities. It is difficult for those still employed to work from home and for teachers and students to do distance learning. It is difficult for those unemployed to live on a tight budget. It is difficult for those employed in essential businesses to serve the public while taking necessary safety measures – constant cleaning and sanitizing, wearing face coverings for hours at a time, etc. It is difficult to keep social distance and wear face coverings in certain areas to help protect others as well as ourselves. It is difficult not to be able to go out to restaurants or visit family and friends in their homes.
And while we acknowledge these difficulties and express them to one another – as we should – we in La Habra generally have been doing so in a healthy, loving and respectful manner, with a positive attitude. Our La Habra community certainly is very different from some Orange County coastal cities in this regard, as we have seen in the news the past few weeks. Trying not to commit the sin of pride, I must confess that I am very proud of you and proud to be pastor of OLG in La Habra!
I pray that God will give us the help and grace to continue being cheerful givers, not only in how we love and care for one another during this time of the coronavirus but also in the years beyond.
