Happy Father’s Day to you fathers!  Although mothers had their day last month, I hope that you fathers will not be offended that I am going to take this opportunity to provide some words of accolade and encouragement both to fathers and mothers who are parenting their families at home during this time of the coronavirus pandemic. 

 

As a celibate priest, I can only imagine the challenges that you fathers and mothers face on a day-to-day basis.  During the school year, I know that it was challenging for you to supervise, encourage and cajole your children in distance learning.  Now that summer “vacation” has arrived, such that it is, the challenge is to keep your children occupied with enough things to do while protecting their health and safety.  For those of you who have continued working during this time, you have had to balance busy work schedules with spending extra time parenting your children.  For those of you who have been laid off from your jobs, your challenge has been to maintain your family life but on a much reduced budget.  I am sure that I am missing all kinds of other challenges that you fathers and mothers are facing during this time of the coronavirus pandemic. 

 

So let me thank you fathers and mothers for hanging in there and doing the best you can with what you have during this time.  Your family life is not “normal” at the moment – virtually nothing in our lives can be “normal” right now.  So good for you fathers and mothers for making the best of these times – finding the blessings in increased family time, discovering new ways to spend time together as a family, getting to know one another in a way that just did not seem to happen in busier “normal” times.  If you feel like God is blessing your family during this time of the coronavirus pandemic, it is because you have recognized the ways that God pours his love and blessing upon all of us and have decided to receive and make good use of those blessings in your family life.  Good for you!  And thank you! 

 

I pray on this Father’s Day weekend that both you fathers and mothers will continue to experience God’s help and blessing in your parenting and family life.  Happy Father’s Day!  And by the grace of God, it will be! 

¡Feliz Día del Padre para ustedes padres! Aunque las madres tuvieron su día el mes pasado, espero que sus padres no se ofendan porque voy a aprovechar esta oportunidad para brindar algunas palabras de elogio y aliento tanto a los padres como a las madres que crían a sus familias en casa durante este tiempo del pandemia de coronavirus. 

 

Como sacerdote célibe, solo puedo imaginar los desafíos que enfrentan ustedes padres y madres en el día a día. Durante el año escolar, sé que fue difícil para ustedes supervisar, alentar y engatusar a sus hijos en el aprendizaje a distancia. Ahora que han llegado las "vacaciones" de verano, tal como es, el desafío es mantener a sus hijos ocupados con suficientes cosas para hacer mientras protegen su salud y seguridad. Para aquellos de ustedes que han seguido trabajando durante este tiempo, han tenido que equilibrar los horarios de trabajo ocupados con pasar tiempo extra criando a sus hijos. Para aquellos de ustedes que han sido despedidos de sus trabajos, su desafío ha sido mantener su vida familiar pero con un presupuesto muy reducido. Estoy seguro de que me estoy perdiendo muchos otros desafíos que ustedes padres y madres enfrentan durante este tiempo de la pandemia de coronavirus. 

 

Permítanme agradecerles a ustedes padres y madres por su persistencia en hacer lo mejor que puedan con lo que tienen durante este tiempo. Su vida familiar no es "normal" en este momento – prácticamente nada en nuestras vidas puede ser "normal" en este momento. Así que gracias a ustedes padres y madres para hacer el mejor de estos tiempos – encontrando las bendiciones en el aumento del tiempo familiar, descubriendo nuevas formas de pasar tiempo juntos como familia, se conociendo de una manera que simplemente no parecía suceder en tiempos "normales" más ocupados. Si sienten que Dios está bendiciendo a su familia durante este tiempo de la pandemia de coronavirus, es porque han reconocido las formas en que Dios derrama su amor y bendición sobre todos nosotros y han decidido recibir y hacer un buen uso de esas bendiciones en su vida familiar. ¡Bien por ustedes! ¡Y gracias! 

 

Oro en este fin de semana del Día del Padre para que ustedes padres y madres continúen experimentando la ayuda y la bendición de Dios en su vida familiar. ¡Feliz Día del Padre! ¡Y por la gracia de Dios, lo será!
