This will not last forever.  Those are my words of encouragement for this weekend.  They may not sound overly encouraging, but I think they reflect our current reality as we navigate our way through the coronavirus pandemic.  Until a vaccine can be developed and widely distributed, our lives will be very different than before the coronavirus – wearing of face coverings, physical distancing, how we celebrate the Eucharist and the other sacraments, how we connect with one another, how we work or go to school, how we shop, how we dine in our favorite restaurants, how we exercise, etc.  Many of these changes in our lives have been at least annoying, if not depressing.  For some, these changes have been especially difficult, including serious illness and economic distress.  But I think the one thing we all can hang on to is that this will not last forever.  The coronavirus may wreak havoc in our lives in the meantime – for some more than others – but this will not last forever. 

 

So as we continue our journey through the coronavirus pandemic and at times feel distress about all the changes in our lives because of the coronavirus, let us remember that these changes in our lives are temporary, not permanent, for the most part likely to last a matter of months, not years (although some effects of the coronavirus pandemic likely will require some years to dissipate).  Hopefully this will help us have more patience with these temporary changes in our lives, help us (to use imagery from this Sunday’s Gospel) to see these changes in our lives as a way of taking up our crosses and following Jesus, at least for the time being.  This will not last forever. 

Esto no durará para siempre. Esas son mis palabras de aliento para este fin de semana. Puede que no suenen demasiado alentadores, pero creo que reflejan nuestra realidad actual mientras navegamos a través de la pandemia de coronavirus. Hasta que se desarrolle una vacuna y se distribuya ampliamente, nuestras vidas serán muy diferentes a las anteriores al coronavirus: uso de cubiertas faciales, distanciamiento físico, cómo celebramos la Eucaristía y los otros sacramentos, cómo nos conectamos entre nosotros, cómo trabajamos o ir a la escuela, cómo compramos, cómo cenamos en nuestros restaurantes favoritos, cómo hacemos ejercicio, etc. Muchos de estos cambios en nuestras vidas han sido al menos molestos, si no deprimentes. Para algunos, estos cambios han sido especialmente difíciles, incluyendo enfermedades graves y dificultades económicas. Pero creo que lo único a lo que todos podemos aferrarnos es que esto no durará para siempre. El coronavirus puede causar estragos en nuestras vidas mientras tanto - para algunos más que otros - pero esto no durará para siempre. 

 

Entonces, a medida que continuamos nuestro viaje a través de la pandemia del coronavirus y, a veces, sentimos angustia por todos los cambios en nuestras vidas debido al coronavirus, recordemos que estos cambios en nuestras vidas son temporales, no permanentes, en su mayor parte probablemente cuestión de meses, no años (aunque algunos efectos de la pandemia de coronavirus probablemente requerirán algunos años para disiparse). Esperemos que esto nos ayude a tener más paciencia con estos cambios temporales en nuestras vidas, ayúdenos (a usar las imágenes del Evangelio de este domingo) para ver estos cambios en nuestras vidas como una forma de tomar nuestras cruces y seguir a Jesús, al menos para de momento. Esto no durará para siempre.
