Last weekend, we experienced record heat.   This weekend, record-breaking wildfires are burning out-of-control in California and other western states, resulting in death, destruction and poor air quality.  Even without the COVID-19 pandemic, all of this would present significant difficulty, including in our faith life.  But together they sometimes feel like the one-two punch.

Let us not fall into thinking that all of this means that God is punishing us.  As Catholic Christians, we believe that our God is not a vengeful God but, rather, a loving, caring God.  It is so important that when it seems like natural disasters and phenomena are punching us in the gut over and over again that we know that it is not God who is throwing these punches.  Rather, God is in our corner and has our back, trying to guide us and certainly loving and caring for us to see us through our difficulty.  “Emmanuel” – “God with us” – needs to be our refrain not only during Advent and Christmas but especially during times of difficulty like we are experiencing now.  God is indeed with us, now and always.  If our faith in God’s loving presence is wavering in any way, it would be good to ask God to increase our faith in his presence, because we really need to have a sense of God’s love and care during this time.

I hope that our air quality here in La Habra will improve sufficiently by this evening (Saturday) so that I will see most of you at one of our Masses this weekend.  We need God and each other during this time and need to gather together to celebrate the Sunday Eucharist as long as we can do so safely.  There is no better way to experience God’s loving presence than celebrating the Sunday Eucharist together.

El fin de semana pasado, experimentamos un calor récord. Este fin de semana, incendios forestales récord se están quemando fuera de control en California y otros estados del oeste, lo que resulta en muerte, destrucción y mala calidad del aire. Incluso sin la pandemia de COVID-19, todo esto presentaría una dificultad significativa, incluso en nuestra vida de fe. Pero juntos a veces sienten que nos golpean una y otra vez.

No caigamos en pensar que todo esto significa que Dios nos está castigando. Como cristianos católicos, creemos que nuestro Dios no es un Dios vengativo sino, más bien, un Dios amoroso y bondadoso. Es tan importante que cuando parece que los desastres naturales nos golpean una y otra vez, sabemos que no es Dios quien está lanzando estos golpes. Más bien, Dios está en nuestro rincón y nos respalda, tratando de guiarnos y ciertamente amándonos y cuidándonos para superar nuestras dificultades. “Emmanuel” - “Dios con nosotros” - debe ser nuestro estribillo no solo durante el Adviento y la Navidad, sino especialmente en tiempos de dificultad como los que estamos viviendo ahora. Dios está verdaderamente con nosotros, ahora y siempre. Si nuestra fe en la amorosa presencia de Dios está vacilando de alguna manera, sería bueno pedirle a Dios que aumente nuestra fe en su presencia, porque realmente necesitamos tener un sentido del amor y el cuidado de Dios durante este tiempo.

Espero que la calidad del aire aquí en La Habra mejore lo suficiente esta tarde (sábado) de modo que los veré a la mayoría de ustedes en una de nuestras Misas este fin de semana. Necesitamos a Dios y a los demás durante este tiempo y necesitamos reunirnos para celebrar la Eucaristía dominical siempre que podamos hacerlo de manera segura. No hay mejor manera de experimentar la presencia amorosa de Dios que celebrando juntos la Eucaristía dominical.
