We might feel a bit gloomy following the week that we just had.  Early in the week we received the news that Orange County would not move from the red tier to the less restrictive orange tier as had been expected (which would have allowed OLG and other large churches in Orange County to have up to 200 people at worship services rather than the current 100).  The tone of the election campaigns seemed to become even more negative this past week.  And yesterday we awoke to the news that President and Mrs. Trump have tested positive for COVID-19.

I find myself having to be very mindful these days to count the blessings in my life so as to keep a positive attitude.  So Orange County is still in the red tier.  What a blessing that at least we can gather in groups of larger than 100 outdoors and celebrate the Eucharist together there.  And the red tier also allows restaurants, stores and many other businesses to remain open with safety measures in place.  All of these are blessings in our lives.

So there is a lot of negativity in the election campaigns these days, especially as we enter the last month before the election.   What else is new?  What a blessing that here in the United States, we have real elections, usually with multiple candidates for each office and a robust discussion of the issues – which, yes, sometimes can turn negative.  What a blessing that God has led our nation throughout its history to become more and more democratic and to include more and more people in the democratic process.

It is upsetting that the President and First Lady have tested positive for COVID-19.  It is tragic that so many have died of COVID-19, while so many others have suffered greatly recovering from COVID-19.  But what a blessing that we live in a country with a phenomenal health care system, including awesome doctors, nurses and other health care workers.  Having had the privilege to travel around the world and glimpse the health care systems in other countries, I feel so blessed that we have our health care system in the United States – albeit always a work in progress to increase access and quality.  When I begin to feel a bit gloomy about my own current health issues, I try to remember how blessed I am that if I have to be sick, this is the best place in the world to be sick!  So whether one has COVID-19 or some other illness, if one has access to our health care system in the United States, he or she is indeed blessed.

So the best “vaccine” against gloominess, in my opinion, is counting one’s blessings – not just saying “I am blessed” but actually taking some time to enumerate individually the multiple ways that each of us is blessed by God.  Of course, God blesses us so bountifully that we cannot count all of our blessings in one sitting.  But if we are experiencing some gloominess, I recommend that we stop and think of at least five to ten blessings in our lives.  That always helps me to have a more positive attitude.  I hope that it works the same for you!

Podríamos sentirnos un poco tristes después de la semana que acabamos de tener. A principios de la semana recibimos la noticia de que el Condado de Orange no se movería del nivel rojo al nivel naranja menos restrictivo como se esperaba (lo que habría permitido que OLG y otras iglesias grandes en el Condado de Orange tuvieran hasta 200 personas en los servicios en lugar de que los 100 actuales). El tono de las campañas electorales pareció volverse aún más negativo la semana pasada. Y ayer nos despertamos con la noticia de que el Presidente y la Señora Trump dieron positivo por COVID-19.

Me encuentro teniendo que estar muy atento en estos días para contar las bendiciones en mi vida a fin de mantener una actitud positiva. Entonces, el Condado de Orange todavía está en el nivel rojo. Qué bendición que al menos podamos reunirnos en grupos de más de 100 al aire libre y celebrar juntos la Eucaristía allí. Y el nivel rojo también permite que los restaurantes, tiendas y muchos otros negocios permanezcan abiertos con medidas de seguridad implementadas. Todas estas son bendiciones en nuestras vidas.

Así que hay mucha negatividad en las campañas electorales estos días, especialmente cuando entramos en el último mes antes de las elecciones. ¿Qué más hay de nuevo? Qué bendición que aquí en los Estados Unidos tengamos elecciones reales, generalmente con múltiples candidatos para cada cargo y una discusión sólida de los temas, que, sí, a veces pueden volverse negativos. Qué bendición que Dios haya llevado a nuestra nación a lo largo de su historia a volverse cada vez más democrática e incluir a más y más personas en el proceso democrático.

Es molesto que el presidente y la primera dama hayan dado positivo por COVID-19. Es trágico que tantos hayan muerto de COVID-19, mientras que tantos otros hayan sufrido mucho recuperándose del COVID-19. Pero qué bendición es que vivamos en un país con un sistema de atención médica fenomenal, que incluye médicos, enfermeras y otros trabajadores de la salud increíbles. Habiendo tenido el privilegio de viajar alrededor del mundo y vislumbrar los sistemas de atención médica en otros países, me siento muy bendecido de tener nuestro sistema de atención médica en los Estados Unidos, aunque siempre un trabajo en progreso para aumentar el acceso y la calidad. Cuando empiezo a sentirme un poco triste por mis propios problemas de salud actuales, trato de recordar lo bendecido que soy de que si tengo que estar enfermo, ¡este es el mejor lugar del mundo para estar enfermo! Entonces, ya sea que uno tenga COVID-19 o alguna otra enfermedad, si uno tiene acceso a nuestro sistema de atención médica en los Estados Unidos, es una verdadera bendición.

Entonces, la mejor "vacuna" contra la tristeza, en mi opinión, es contar las bendiciones de uno, no solo decir "Soy bendecido", sino tomarse un tiempo para enumerar individualmente las múltiples formas en que cada uno de nosotros es bendecido por Dios. Por supuesto, Dios nos bendice tan generosamente que no podemos contar todas nuestras bendiciones de una sola vez. Pero si estamos experimentando algo de tristeza, recomiendo que nos detengamos y pensemos en al menos cinco o diez bendiciones en nuestra vida. Eso siempre me ayuda a tener una actitud más positiva. ¡Espero que funcione igual para ti!
